hello North Shore Eagle families I am Lisa branch and I am the counselor here at North Shore Elementary School and I am going to be doing a monthly informational did with different information about things going on here at North Shore and then just in general information where you sew on Welcome to the 2020 to 2023 school year and as I said I'm missing I am the school counselor here on the screen is my information for how to get in touch with me I do both group and individual counseling sometimes I go into classrooms and work with students so is you feel like your student needs some counseling services at please feel free to reach out to me I would love to work with them and so as I said I'm going to be doing a monthly informational video giving you different information so the first thing I wanted to talk about are the new times so from last week you probably know this already but I did want to make sure everybody is aware so drop off is okay at 8:15 okay are tardy Bell the first bell rings at 8:30 and then the tardy Bell will be ringing at 8:35 so we need to make sure that everybody is here by 8:35 and then are normal school day ends at 2:55 and our early dismissal is at 1 the last week we did not have early dismissal on Thursday but we will start with our early dismissal Thursday is beginning this week so 1 is when we get this message if you look at the sky calendar you will notice there are a few Thursdays here and there that we do not have early outs so on the Thursday right before winter break will not be an early out and then we have several weeks right the end of the school year at the end of May and then the the weeks that we have in June none of those will be early out so again just pay attention to the calendar and you know in my monthly videos I'll be letting you know if they're some changes in any of the scheduling and then the week of conference week right before fall break which is October 3rd through 7th we actually have early out everyday that we can to accommodate their schedule for conferences one thing that I wanted to talk about with our drop-off if you are a parent that drops your student off we need to make sure for safety reasons that the flow of traffic continues movie if you've been around here at drop-off time in the morning you know how hectic it gets up on North Shore and then down Stanfield as well so we need to make sure the flow of traffic is going the please pull through the cones and please who all the way to the front if you're the very first car pull up to the very last tone that you can get to and then if there's cars in front of you please pull forward as far as you can't just so we can get as many cars in the time and getting us students out safely and quickly if you're not going to drop off but you're going to actually Park and walk your student in please park up on North Shore or if your parking on Steam Shield please park north of the entrance okay when we have some people parking where people are trying to get through the line to drop off and then that makes it challenging about to pull out into traffic so if you are parking and walking your student in again north of the entrance on either side of the street or on Northshore and then if or if you're pulling into the parking lot please pull in list all don't just stop on cars we have buses coming in and people are crossing over and it just you know our biggest concern is the safety of of our students and families so please make sure that you are on working in a stall or parking on the road or just pulling in and dropping off will make sure your kiddo gets to their classes okay all right and then calendar I talked about that one thing I do want mention as we do have back to school night this Thursday August 11th and there will be a quick presentation by our principal mr. Phillips at 5:30 and then the classes will be open from 6 27 that we hope to see everybody here so that your teacher can talk to you about all the expectations in the fun things that'll be going on in the classes OK Google some different social emotional learning Grand Sierra and to help our students with I'm social emotional needs and one of them ever been really excited about this we have second step and we've had second step but now that we have purchased the new digital as steps I think this is going to be a great program for the teachers and so every grade level should be doing this unit one is growth mindset and goal setting and in the month of August working on lessons 1 2 and 3 and 4 kindergarten they're doing things like learning how to watch and listen and be thinkers why it's so important to pay attention you know that sometimes we make mistakes but that's okay first grade again time to pay attention is one of our headings of our units are lessons everybody gets distracted but how do we pull ourselves back and pay attention and you know being proud of the things that we we are setting our goals to second grade how to get good at something what mistakes tell us and helpful and unhelpful thought are the three lesson titles there third grade gets into talking about their brains and how their brains work and so changing your brain getting better with practice and more than practice is and their lesson titles and with fourth grade they start getting into goal setting so setting a good goal and making a plan to follow through with that goal reflecting on their growth in the the things that they've been doing and then fifth grade in about goal setting so they're talking about you know what's the right goes for me whether it what are the things that I should be studying for my goals again making that plan and sometimes we have to change the plan when we get started because it we're finding that it's not helping us out with what our goal is that we set we also have character education that we're doing so our August character trait is respect and so are definition of facts on for the purpose of our character education is honoring and showing consideration and value to people property the environment and yourself to treat others as well even if they look at orb leave differently than you do so you can be talking to your child when they come home about these different things and see ask them what they learned as far as the character trait of respect and on the special must know second Stephan activities that they've been doing in class so I want to spend a little bit of time about a talking about independence so anytime your child's absent we need you to be calling the antenna clerk at least letting your teacher know I know most of the teachers have her if not all of them have remind we need to have all absences verify whether they're excused or unexcused okay so please give us a call I have Jenny about his attendance clerk I have her extension there to 221 you can leave a voicemail that's fine even if you get Christine's at extension maybe you're talking to her about something just let us know we need need to have all absences verified again whether they're excused or unexcused very very important that we know why your child has has not been here at school okay and I'm so we really were in on The Chronic absenteeism and what the state defines chronic absenteeism is a chronic absentee has been defined in Ed code section 60901 see one as a pupil who is a set on 10% or more of the school days in the school year so what does that mean I'm missing 10% of school is about 18 days of the school year which is about 2 days per month I miss so students who are chronically absent often have trouble with early reading and math skills building relationships and developing good attendance habits if they're absent a lot they're not able to build those I'm so we want to make sure that that our students are showing up to school every day and we understand things come up family emergencies come up kids get sick I mean obviously if they're throwing up or have a fever you know covid is the big issue right now of course we don't want them here at school if those things are happening but it's so important to make sure that your student is getting here to school everyday or as many days as pause spell absence and tardiness actually affect the whole classroom because the teachers having to maybe slow down a little bit to help that student that's absent a lot catch up I'm in and it's just real the student is missing out on that direct instruction that the teachers giving so you know I just really want to stress the importance of attendance and having your students here I'm at school as much as possible all right so this is just a little graphic graphic on when do absence has become a problem you know 9 or for your absences this is based on 180 days school year which is what we have the night if you had since this is considered status kind of 17 days would be kind of some warning signs you might start having those what are called starts meetings with Jenny and mr. Phillips and myself and a few other people that are on start team and then when we get into that chronic absence of 18 or more days then that's when we start getting the starboard which is a board of there's teachers there's I'm on the board we have district office people the deputy district attorney of San Bernardino County is on the board we have some community members and you know we try to brainstorm and come up with some strategies for getting your student here because it's very very important Stokes what are some things you can do to help so one thing is you know making sure students are getting to bed on time and and having a morning routine so that they are getting up getting breakfast the older students may be yours are starting to shower in the morning you know getting ready and getting here on time and having those routine really starts helping to build those have the night before I even do for myself I have my clothes out the night before so I don't even have to think about it I just get myself ready in the morning make sure their backpacks or are packed up and ready any homework that they've had anything that was taken out of the backpack gets back in the backpack and and ready for the day and if you do that the night before again there's no spot in the morning and you know things come up in the morning I know I have two kids of my own and I know sometimes it gets a little hectic in the morning so if you kind of I am for that and have those things prepared ahead of time it definitely makes that morning routine a little bit easier so develop backup plans for getting to school if something comes up you know maybe you have a family member that's nearby neighbor another parent baby you know things do come up sometimes we get outside our car and at 1 start or we have a flat or in the winter with the snow gets very challenging so I have some kind of a back-up plan so so does happen that you're able to get your child here to school still had a parent last year calling in the winter and her garage door was frozen shut she could not get her car out so you know she called I'm trying to get somebody to bring my child but you know things come on up and and we understand that but it's so important to have your student here at school so have those Back-up Plan if your child must stay home and like I said something. happens you know maybe it's illness or quarantine a family emergency reach out to that your child's teacher you know try to get as many things that they've missed on as possible and then just different ideas that they can can can you do you know learning from home while they're not here at school if you're able to actually come by and get the work I know the teachers would appreciate that because that's the big thing especially with covid and a lot of times we don't have that choice but you have to quarantine it's a big important thing with that is making sure the kids aren't getting behind in the school work that they're doing here at school by continuing to do that at home so make sure you're reaching out to the teacher to see what your students missing if they really have to be absent talk to your children you know about the importance of going to school everyday and on time you know that is important and so if you have those conversations with them you know hopefully the battles will be a Less in the morning of getting a high school try not to plan family vacations or non emergency doctor dentist appointment for times when your child is in school we do have those early outs on Thursday so if you needed to do something a little bit earlier you know maybe plan it on Thursdays plan it on those days that we have off on the are brakes and things like that I understand here up and Big Bear you know sometimes you've got to go off the mountain for those appointment so you know sometimes it's unavoidable but if you can avoid it at all you know I try not to have your child taken out of school for those kinds of things if if you can avoid it and you know just the importance talking about attendance but you know tardiness is important to make sure that your child is getting here to school on time again if they're coming late then there's a disruption in the class they've missed whatever they were doing before that your student got there another teacher might have to take time away from the whole class to get them caught up so it's just really really important to make sure that they're getting here on time and I'm going to share this quick little video and he'll be with me recording that it Shazam okay. In the but only place that I doubt and he's just another reason why attendance is so important I believe that one of the greatest gifts to parents the child is medication however in order for a child to be educated they need to come to school any chance of hail on Combat Four frequent absences are linked directly to poor performance a new study shows the responsibility goes on the pants but we have similar struggles with truancy a lot of kindergarten parents and it's hard to see the time but it is directly affected dropout rate sets the stage for being a very responsible at some point in the future really critical that kids get to school on time and come everyday. You back is that a question question is I can go to school and they will be accepted by their boss to get to work on time come to work every day they said they do their best to get their students to school everyday somewhat more difficult than other morning routines and rituals at home I'm sure your kids to get to school on time and we got do the students Seahawks play some history barefoot ghost girl Lil peep green here I just want to thank all of you for taking the time to watch this video if you ever have any questions at all please distilled free to give us a call you know we've got Christine and Jenny and my cell mr. Phillips their principal we're all here office and we're here to help out and answer any questions that you have so thank you so much and let's make this a great
